he does have vitiligo but i think he also bleached his skin too.
im too young to haveseen him black. hes always been white to me.

His excuse is a skin disease but it is obvious that he is bleaching his skin. The disease that he says he has makes you have patchy white spots throughout your skin – he does not have this. Watch this and you will see him morph:

He came out with Off the Wall in 1979 and there were some minor changes – still darker skin but a thinner nose and face.

In 1984 Thriller came out and you could notice an even bigger change in him. By 1986 it was in the news that he was sleeping in an oxygen chamber that was kind of like a coffin and people really started to think that he was “weirding out”.

I grew up with Michael Jackson and it’s a shame to see what he’s morphed himself into. His talent is so unbelievable – but he never had a proper childhood and was basically a money making machine along with his brothers for his parents. From 1979 to about 1990 – he was unstoppable.

In answer to your question, ‘how did people react…’, it seemed to be more a display of what MJ (Michael Jackson) would do to sell albums. The fact he was becoming whiter and whiter was more a publicity stunt, rather than a cover-up to is vitiligo. His music and “Moon Walk” was multitudes larger than his appearance.

His trademark through the early eighties was the glove on one hand. That’s when it came out in the media that he has vitiligo, as I do and so does my brother. Rumors it spread throughout the rest of his body and ‘bleaching’ was the only way to look semi-normal, that and facial augmentation (face ‘lift’?). My case was / is not that severe. I can hide it, sort of.

I still remember MJ on Ed Sullivan and being told that me and him were born two weeks apart. It’s scary, today.

But, back to MJ. There was no outcry; no disbelief, no feeling of being a trader or sellout. It was just the music industry taking a perfectly good talent and turning his appearance into something ‘unworldly’.
